Small social dweller of the arid lands
Survival companion, miniature worker and essential workforce: the Yakou harvests, carries, builds and watches over the colony's water.
Field data
Codex notes
Understanding a Yakou is not just knowing a creature. It is beginning to understand how the world accepts, or refuses, that anyone survives in it.
Overview
The Yakou is neither a classic beast of burden nor a simply docile creature. It stands somewhere between companion, worker and survivor. It carries, follows, harvests, waits, endures. It is not built for domination, but for persistence.
- Role in the colony: survival companion, miniature worker and essential workforce
- Home biomes: dry steppes, sand dunes, edges of rocky areas
- Key role: harvesting, carrying small loads, building, observing and managing water
Abilities
The Yakou is not an automaton: it is the direct extension of your management choices, and the best indicator of your camp's health.
- Versatility: it performs all the first vital tasks of a new settlement.
- All-terrain agility: its wiry build and long tail let it work in the harshest areas and on slippery ground.
- Survival gauge: its posture changes with its state. An exhausted or curled-up Yakou signals a thermal imbalance or a shortage.
Heat and needs
Hardier than a human in the drought, the Yakou is still bound by the laws of its environment. Exposure time is what matters, not just raw heat.
- Comfort zone (18 °C to 26 °C): optimal work pace, nominal water use.
- Heat discomfort (above 26 °C): its water consumption rises quickly.
- Critical zone (prolonged exposure): upkeep costs explode; risk of withdrawal or death.
Warning signs: water stocks dropping fast, tired gait or units curling up, Yakous assigned too long away from temperate areas.
Life cycle
- Young: low on its legs, very quick but fragile. Observing and learning.
- Adult: upright, fitted with straps and tools, very mobile. Main workforce.
- Elder: wrapped in cloth, withdrawn, spiritual. Contemplative or ceremonial role.
In the wild its skin shows bright greens and turquoise; over its life in the colony it gains blue or warm markings and ringed patterns on the tail.
Temperament
Don't look for aggression in a Yakou. Its large, dark, shining eyes show that it constantly observes and assesses its surroundings. It carries no weapons, only everyday tools: lamps, glowing stones, capes, bandages. It is part of the very fabric of the camp.
